Unit 01

A full time job, as you can tell by the name is where you're working over a certain amount of hours usually over 25 hours in a week is classed as a full time job. With a full time job you can dedicate yourself and your work to that one company and focus on what you need to do for the company. Having a full time job is better than having a part time one for many reasons, one being pay. You are usually paid more for a full time job because you are working a lot of hours and dedicating a lot of your life to the company you work for. When you become employed you and your employer must sign a fixed contract and this can't be changed for a certain period of time. If you are a freelance worker then what this means is that you work on your own terms, some day you might be very busy and others you may be quiet and not get any work at all. It's basically a part time job.
If you are working full time it's almost impossible to get another job simply because of the hours that are being worked. If you had two full time jobs then you would leave very little time for yourself. With a part time job on the other hand it's a different story. You could have two or even three part time jobs and this would be as equal to having a full time one. With the way the economy is at the moment in Britain if you have a part time job it's very risky as you could lose it to make room for someone else which is pretty bad really.
Full time employment: The pay is better, You can get a pension, it looks better on CV, you get more holidays and breaks compared to part time work.

Part time employment: If you're lucky you can get more than one job, you have more time to yourself.
Freelance: You make more money than just full time/part time work if your successful, there is less of a risk than just working self employed because you have already got some income going in.

With full time employment you are more secure compared to having part time employment because you're there as a permanent employee and you are always guaranteed work. Your wages will always be better than someone who has got a part time job.
It depends on the job. Certain jobs can be flexible in the hours that you work and with the breaks that you take for lunch. Others won't be as flexible, if your employer says you must work ten hours a day with only a half an hour break and it's in the contract and you have signed it then that's what must be done.
Again this depends on the job. Some jobs the company will automatically deduct it from your pay slip to make sure it gets paid. Other jobs like if you're self employed you will have to pay your own tax and national insurance. A freelancer will also need to pay their own tax.

Graphical Design Companies: Foundry 34, NG Technology, Zelo Creative Limited, Clockwork Design & New Media, Jigsaw Design Studios, Fluid Pixels, Carrot Media. These companies employees design graphical images such as logos and banners. They would then send them out to their clients.

Web Design Companies: NG Technology, Zelo Creative Limited, Clockwork Design & New Media, Indigo Multimedia, Tricycle Media, Cavens. These companies employees will design websites for clients. They would then send the finished product back to their clients

Graphical designers need experience with Photoshop, Fireworks and Illustrator. You need to be good at art and be able to come up with artistic ideas.

Web designers need experience using HTML and CSS. you need experience using Dreamweaver as well as Photoshop and Illustrator.

I would go on job sites to look for graphical designers. One website that I have used before is www.designcrowd.com. On this website you become a freelance designer. I have submitted work before and I am continuing to do so. I will post a picture at the bottom of this blog to show you what it looks like. web designers and web developers or I would apply for recruitment agencies who would find you work. You would need a Portfolio of your designs if you were going to apply to be a graphic designer. You would need to show all of your websites that you have designed if you wanted to become a website designer. To become a web developer you would need to make sure that they show the websites that they have developed.

I think that this design was good because in the description they asked for something simple and it's a health care business for animals. So i added the first aid cross showing that it does medical treatment and then under that i wrote the companies name which is Oceanside Animal Wellness. This shows that the company is all about animal care. It is a very basic logo and I think it would work well for the company.

Portfolio

What I will be doing today is showing you all how to use Design Crowd. This is the website that you use to create anything from banners to websites. It's very easy to use, what you must do is create an account at www.designcrowd.com then you must search for what you want to design. I will first show you what the website looks like.

Once you are on here create your account and log in. when you have created your account and verified everything, it should look  like this.

Then you must choose what you want to design, do this by hovering over the browse projects tab and then choose what you want to do. once you have finished your design, just submit your work to the client and wait for a response. This is a good way of self employment, you will become a self employed graphics/web designer even though you won't always win you can still make a good bit of money if you do.

Portfolio

What I will be doing today is making a like button for my website which links to the Facebook page. This is really easy to do. What you must do is go onto Facebook and then go to your page, when you are there click the welcome tab. It then shows you five steps of what you should to to get people attracted to your page. "Add a like box" is the 4th one on that page click it. Then chose how long and how wide you want the box to be, once you have set everything up click get code. When the code pops up you must copy this and place it in your Dreamweaver index. Place it where you want it to be and then save. It doesn't show up when you preview it so when you copy the index on Filezilla to the internet then it will show up.

Continuing with my Portfolio

Today what I am going to focus on is making my rollover work. A rollover is a load of images that are put into a shape, mine is a square and what it does is rolls over from image to image. This is very simple to do. First of all you must go to http://cu3ox.com/ and download cu3ox for your PC/MAC. once you have done that you have to chose all the images that you wish to use. Then save the rollover, once you have done that click publish then chose your website that you with to use it on. Then you must chose where you want to place it. It goes a little bit funny with the positioning at first so what you must do is copy from where it says <start cu3ox till when it says end cu3ox> copy/cut that and place it where you want it to go.

The next 2 weeks

I have been set a deadline for when I have to have my work handed in and completed by. I have two weeks and what I will be doing is updating my blog daily letting you all know what I have been up to each and every day. Today what I have been doing is making pop up windows for my portfolio. At first I was confused by the whole idea but once I read it through and learned how to do it, it was really simple and easy. What you must do to make a pop up window is create an image in photoshop of what you want the link to be E.G. BLOG which is one of mine then save that image as a JPG image. Save it as BLOG1.JPG then change the colour of the image to one that fits your website then save that as BLOG2.JPG. then you must go onto dreamweaver and click where you want to put the image. Once you have done that click on insert then image objects then rollover image. Once you have done that you need to put your two images in, the first one being what the colour will always look like and then second one being the one which is a different colour when you hover your mouse over it. This is how you make a rollover link. Now you must make it a pop up window this doesn't mean opening it up in a new tab. what you must do now is click on where your image is and then click window and then behaviours you should see a small side window pop up and it will have something like this in it
<A> onmouseout  swap image restore
<A>onmouseover swap image

Then in the third box you must click in it and then click the + sign at the top then click onto open browser window, choose the width, length and names, save that and you should be good to go.

Storing clients data

Okay finally we talk about how we store clients data. It is very important that we keep multiple copies of the data backed up in case something goes wrong. It also must be organised so if it's saved on a floppy disk or a CD or both it must be placed away on a shelf under that clients name. You should also keep the data on a memory stick as well as on the computer. The reason we keep data backed up on multiple devices is because if we lose it then the client wont be happy and we will have to redo everything we had done so its very very important that we keep it backed up.

Text frames and image frames

Text frames. All objects placed on the page or the pasteboard in a desktop publishing software application have a sometimes invisible bounding box or frame around the object - the name used by the software application may vary. With some applications the frame becomes visible when the object is selected and then becomes lighter or invisible when the object is de-selected or can be turned off. Text frames hold text.
Depending on the software, text frames may have handles for resizing or dragging the text frames. Some software allows the attributes of text frames to be adjusted to increase or decrease the space between the text and text frame, change the background color, or add visible rules or enclosed borders (also called frames) around the text object.
While text frames are typically rectangular, some applications allow you to create text frames in other shapes such as circles and stars.
Text frames can be linked together so that longer articles can flow from one text frame to the next, such as columns of text in a newsletter or so long articles can appear across multiple pages.
The text frame is also known as a Text box

Image frames. The image frame is what is used to place an image inside of it. A good example of image frames is Adobe indesign. You place the image frame and then import the image into it. thats pretty much how it works, its very simple.

Why we proof read clients work

Proof reading is very important and should be done all the time with work. The spell checker doesn't always fix the mistakes you make. You don't want to be making clients angry and upset with the work you have done so make sure that you proof read the work over and over until you can't find anymore mistakes.

The purpose of text editors

Now I will be describing how these text editors are important.

  1. Character. These are all the things that we see when we type up our work. Letters, numbers and punctuation marks are all classed as characters.
  2. Point size. This is the height of the font which is expressed in points
  3. Kerning. This is when we adjust the spacing between letters or characters in a piece of text to be printed.
  4. Leading. This is the amount of blank space between lines of print.

Grid systems

I will be telling you about three main things in the grid system which you should learn.

  1. The Bleed. This is when the sheet or page margin is trimmed so that the text or illustration can be mutilated.
  2. The Margin. This is the space around the printed or written matter on the page.
  3. The Gutter. This is the inside margins or blank space between two faceing pages.

A good example of a double page spread

I have looked at a double page spread off the internet and in photoshop I have enlarged the image and stated five points as to how its a good double page spread.

You can read my five points on the image, I think that this double page spread is suitable for the target audience because it's from a rock magazine and its got alot of information about the band right there for the audience to read and when publishing it they haven't over complicated it by throwing in loads of colours etc.
